When you embark on your next weekend on the lake keep the following tips in mind:
Always be aware of the basic safety check recommended by the National Safe Boating Council and The American Association Of Poison Control Centers.
Swimming and Boating Skills
Enroll in a swimming course and take an online boating course or one in your area. Make sure you have a comfortable and properly fitted life jacket. We usually have our kids put theirs on and try it out for a little while before we get to the lake on the boat, especially with little ones. This can avoid frustration and tears for you and your little one. Making sure they are comfortable ahead of time is a great idea.
Watch the Weather
Prepare for local weather conditions. Always be on the look out for approaching storms. Wind can make it difficult to make it to shore and because water conducts electricity, it is time to stop boating if you can see or hear a storm.
Tell A Friend Your Plan
Communicate your trip details in case of an emergency. Tell your plan to a friend. Let them know who is on the boat, where you will be, and how long you will be gone. Today we rely on our cell phones in case of emergencies, but out on the water there are times you will be out of cell phone coverage.
Things To Keep In Mind
Keep all boat maintenance chemicals in their original containers. Keep these, medications, bug killers, etc. out of the sight and reach of children.
Maintain constant supervision of children, regardless of their swimming abilities and/or use a life jacket.
Keep up to date on CPR procedures.
Exhaust From Boat Engines
Don not swim or wade near a boat’s exhaust pipe, sit on the swim platform when engine is running, the boat’s exhaust produces deadly carbon monoxide that should not be inhaled. Never enter the enclosed exhaust vent area under a swim platform!
Check Your Boats Batteries and Electric Wiring
Having a trouble free weekend can be as simple as making sure your boats batteries are charged. Getting out to the lake to find out your boat will not make it off the ramp is never any fun. A lot of times when your motor will not start it is due to bad batteries or corrosion somewhere within an electrical connection. Routine maintenance on the electric wiring of a boat may often times get overlooked. Schedule a check up with Maui Worx to inspect your electrical on your boat today!
Boat Interior Upholstery And Canvas
Keeping your boat interior healthy is an important thing for such a big investment. We can guide you to the right maintenance for your boat vinyl and canvas. Boat seats take a lot of abuse and often times need repaired, no matter how careful we are to keep up their appearance. Do not know who to turn to for your canvas repair on your houseboat? Maui Worx’s is here to help. Give us a call and set up an appointment, we will get your boat in top shape.
Keep these tips in mind next time you’re on a watersports adventure.
